Update RE: Referees
On Thursday of this week an extraordinary meeting took place in the Clubhouse of Football Gympie. In attendance was the FGI Elected Executive, High ranking Representatives from each of the Clubs, FQ CEO Geoff Foster and Barry Such, the Chairman of State Referees Committee in Queensland.
The intent of the meeting was to reach some direction in the course to recovery from the recent Referees revolt and to meaningfully address the situations which contributed significantly to that walk out.
As a result, there have been identified several key points of discipline that has been agreed must be implemented to enable a maturing of Football in the Region, while retaining enthusiasm within all ranks. They are:
Respect - for all participants in the Sport of Football - be they the Players, Referees or Spectators.
A 'Zero-Tolerance Policy toward harassment' - meaning that any form of harassment toward anybody will not be tolerated and must be admonished in the earliest - to that end, an initiative is being set in place whereby voluntary marshals will be present around the grounds to whom reports can be made and then passed on directly to FGI. Also it is in the interests of all participants to foster and promote civility at all times and to remember our respective 'codes of behaviour' that enables all to participate in this great game in our respective ways.
It is hoped that by encouraging individuals and groups to abide by the standing requirements of attendance at all matches and facilities, we will certainly see an improvement in overall behavioural conduct and a nurturing of a healthier culture within all aspects of the Game.
As a major initiative, a call is being made for an uptake of many more Referees to swell the pool for matches played in the FGI competitions. In an unprecedented move, the Chairman of State Referees Committee in Queensland, Barry Such has announced that when we have the numbers, he guarantees that we will have the resources to conduct Referees courses to train new prospects. He is of the firm opinion that the more Referees FGI has at its disposal, there is less likelihood of unhealthy issues arising out of familiarity.
Also, FGI's long suffering and selflessly serving standing President Trevor Kirk has agreed to resume his duties out of the turmoil of the past weeks. We are thrilled to have retained Trevor's experience and tireless efforts at the helm of FGI. He has the unwavering support of those in attendance.
Now, get out there, play fair and enjoy the sport!

Very Important Message
All players, coaches, managers and spectators are directed to not speak with or otherwise distract referees from their very important duties. If anyone has the inclination to feel that they need to speak to a referee before, during or after the game, they must do so with a Football Gympie Official present. Anyone means anyone, be they Player, Coach, Manager, Spectator or passer-by. If there is a breach of this policy there is an instant 4-week suspension and a $300 fine to the Club as deemed to have been at fault.

Gympie Diggers Football Club Team Photos - RESCHEDULING
It's that time of year again when we have to break out the hair product and brush a little more makeup on before the game - yes, it's photo time again. The inclement weather has impacted on our scheduled time for the photo shoots and subsequently have been postponed to a yet to be determined time. Our Secretary Sue Paterson has been liaising with Harry from Vivid to reschedule to a mutually convenient time. We will inform further when the rescheduling process is complete. Thanks for your understanding.

Anyone means anyone, be they Player, Coach, Manager, Spectator or passer-by. If there is a breach of this policy there is an instant 4-week suspension and a $300 fine to the Club as deemed to have been at fault.
At this moment, all referees who had previously serviced the FGI games have withdrawn their services from all Senior games until further notice - effectively going on strike over a recent incident.
As a side issue - 'someone' has approached Football Queensland and stated that "the whole issue would go away if Trevor Kirk resigned as President of Football Gympie". Subsequently, Trevor has stood aside. Clearly, the person who made that allegation must have fully considered the enormity of their action and the impact that it will undoubtedly have on the stability and smooth operation of Football in Gympie.
The game has enjoyed many years of steady growth and patronage under the stewardship of Trevor Kirk, and his complement of FGI Committee Members. The tremendous commitment in time and effort that Trevor and other volunteers put into the operation week in week out, is invaluable. It just makes you wonder why anyone would make such a statement and to what agenda that person is committed. It is certainly a shocking development. Trevor Kirk - President Football Gympie is one of the few Sports Administrators who actually knows what must be done to keep the Sport going and who's not just in it for the dollars - let's hope we can get him back on deck

A Timely Reminder Parent's & Supporter's Code of Conduct 2008
Supporters and Parents are reminded to familiarise themselves with the Parent's and Supporter's Code of Conduct 2008 document that was posted before the start of the Season.
The Gympie Diggers Football Club wishes to encourage the support of all volunteer Coaches. Their often selfless and unheralded efforts make a valuable contribution to the facilitation of training and match play. Many of our young Players are deriving significant benefit directly from the time and effort being put in by our stable of willing Coaches.
Please take the time to understand that in the interest of inclusion of all Players into each blended Team's makeup, it is often necessary to modify training routines to accommodate the varying individual Player's experience and skill so that we might more fully realise the potential of the individual and to the greater extent the Team goal. At times, the Coach may decide on a course of action to remedy a perceived deficiency within the Team, and within that context make Coaching decisions as part of a larger vision. This being the case, we must trust the decision-making responsibilities we place upon our Coaches, and support their decisions if they are within reason of a larger aim.
If any Parent or Supporter has any issues they would like to bring up with a Coach, then by all means make your concerns heard through the appropriate channels - namely through the Team's Manager in the first instance. This process may in many cases resolve any doubts or queries relating to the Coaching process, and reinforces the essential healthy relationship between the Coach and the Players within the Team.
Please refrain from unhealthy vitriolic outbursts directed towards voluntary Coaches. Remember - it is nearly always the Coach who, awaiting the arrival of a parent to pick up their child, is left to baby-sit a younger Player at the conclusion of a training session.
That is all.
Steve Manthey President, Gympie Diggers Football Club

Rules relating to On-Field Injuries during Games
In relation to a recent spate of on-field injuries, Football Gympie has declared that: Upon instruction from the Referee, the Team's Manager must attend the injured player and assess whether or not the need for further assistance from 'Sports Med' is required.
In the case of sustained assistance, the Team's Manager is to assist the injured player from the field and accompany the injured player to the 'Sports Med/First Aid' area.
For further information contact Football Gympie Secretary Pam Tindall on 5482 1801.
(It is our understanding that the Coach is not to enter the field of play. It is only the Manager who is permitted to enter the field of play upon the request being made to do so by the Referee. More details to follow)

Gympie Diggers Girls Youth 2 side scores well crafted win
We are pleased to congratulate the firm progress being made by our Girls Youth 2 Team in securing their first decisive victory of the Season with a beautifully crafted display of control, determination and skill. The efforts being made by all players is really paying off. The measured start of the Season is showing to be a good strategy in forming up the Team in the transition into the business end of the draw. We are likely to see more of the same solid and cohesive play from the girls in the coming weeks as they bring to the game a growing intensity and an ability to play the full term with the same vigour.

Coach the Coaches Clinic with Dean May
There is another Coaching Clinic/Session being run by Wide Bay RDO Dean May on Wednesday 7th May 2008 at 530pm on Field One at the One Mile Clubhouse.

Set up and take down of Field Nets
We are reminded that when we have the first game on a particular field, we are required to put up the goal nets on that field. Usually our team looks after one end of the field. That entails, hanging the net and installing the corner posts (if supplied). We can find the net-bags for each field (except for Fields 1 & 2) on the ground outside the dressing room sheds near the canteen in the middle of the Main Fields Complex. Subsequently, when we are drawn to have the last game on a particular field we are required to remove the nets and replace into supplied bags with pegs and mallet and return along with corner posts to the racks inside the storage area between the change rooms in the middle of the Main Fields Complex. Your assistance in this operational aspect is expected and is much appreciated.

Sunday 27th April 2008
Reminder on the proper use of 'Skins' during Matches
(directive from Football Queensland) There has been questions raised about the ability of players to wear the skins under garments whilst playing.
The following guidelines apply.
1. If skins are worn they should be the same colour as the pre- dominant colour of the shorts.
2. If skins are not the same colour as the shorts they must be tucked up beneath the hem of the shorts. They should not be visible whilst they player is standing stationery and upright.
3. They must not come below knee level (ie: full length skins even if they are the same colour of the shorts will not be acceptable )

Important message from Football Australia
Dear All, Effective immediately, all players between the ages of 12 and 17 (inclusive) who are not nationals of Australia will require an International Transfer Certificate to be registered as a player in Australia, regardless of whether or not they have ever been registered as a player in their country of origin. This is in keeping with Article 19(3) of the FIFA Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players. The previous practice of Member Federations obtaining Statutory Declarations from minor players declaring they have never been previously registered is no longer acceptable. Member Federations are instead to indicate on the Request Form "Player Not Previously Registered" and also include the location (country/state/city/town) of where the player has come from. Please ensure that your Member Federation puts the above requirement into practice when dealing with players (of the applicable age) who claim to have never been previously registered, to ensure the Member Federation is compliant with the applicable FIFA Regulations.
Please contact me should you have any further questions.

Diggers have drawn first Cooroy Day
Gympie Diggers Football Club have drawn the first of the Season's Cooroy Days. We are scheduled at this stage to head to Cooroy for the day's fixtures against Cooroora United on Saturday 19th April 2008. Stay posted for details as they arise.
The usual procedure follows the course where when a team is drawn to play in Cooroy, that Team must travel to Cooroy for that game and be at the grounds a mandatory 20 minutes ahead of the scheduled kick off time.
In the circumstance where the designated visiting Club has fewer Teams than Cooroora in a particular Category, numbers are made up from other Clubs. There may be occasion for one of our Teams from a particular age category to travel to Cooroy to play to fix the inequity in the running sheet.
It is hoped we will be advised of any such occurrence well in advance.
Other Cooroy days are: 24 May (Round 9, Lions); 28 June (Round 14, Columbia); 26 July (Round 16, Golden City/Valley Rangers)

Soccer Played on the Moon today!!!
NASA has announced that a secret mission to play soccer on the moon successfully conducted a trial match between the Space Agencies leading Football representatives and those from our closest neighbour. The match was played in a specially designed and prepared arena that was sent down from the Space Station a month ago.
Russian cosmonaut Georgi Muchatogologinovavich, on loan from the Russian Space Agency, commented on the game when asked, "Did the gravity of the situation come into play, and how did it feel to be the first Russian to play, let alone walk on the moon?"
He responded, "This is something you ignorant westerners never realised. We already visited the moon long before Armstrong... We were the ones who took the pictures from the surface when the LEM touched down. And we were asked to take their photos. It was a bit like going on a holiday back in the sixties. Our MIR station provided the perfect home away from home. more...

Get ready for the 2008 March Past
The annual start of season March Past is to take place Saturday 29th March 2008 on the main fields 1 & 2 at the One Mile Club House area.
The Diggers Football Committee has discussed initiatives for this year's Presentation of Players and has decided that the focus will be on the younger Players for the March Past. So, we need all the 6 to 10 age groups massing at around 0800 on the far side of field 2, by the far grandstand.
Coaches will need to ensure the strips are on hand to dress their teams. If you have Club hats then most certainly wear them. We need you to bring as many small plastic toy shovels as possible with you on the day to use as props in the March Past - (you know, Diggers digging)..
Also, if you have any Zinc cream in the Club-colours of white, maroon and blue feel free to apply it in stripes across your face, and those of your team mates' - though be careful of your eyes.
Shirl will be there to coordinate things and to get the Digger's song-based chant going.
As round one games will commence shortly after the completion of the March Past and Official Season Opening Ceremony, we anticipate a great weekend's soccer.
Check out the first week's draw by clicking through to the Draw link. Good luck!

They will henceforth be renamed Fields 3A&3B; 4A&4B; 8A&8B; 12A & 12B.

Coaches and Managers get together and gear issue day on 9th March 2008 + Grass Roots Coaching Course
We are having an informal get together to distribute training equipment and have the chance to meet with all the other Coaches within the Club who you might otherwise not have contact with throughout the Season.
If you're thinking of becoming or would like to become a coach please come along and have a chat. The afternoon gets underway from 2pm at the Clubhouse at One Mile. We'll have a sausage sizzle and refreshments.
In another related issue, there will be a 'Grass Roots Coaching Course' held on Wednesday 19th March 2008 from 6pm to 9pm for parents and youth players who would like to get some initial recognition/qualification to supervise the new 'small sided games' format on game days and to assist on coaching days. Dean May, the Regional Development Officer will conduct the Course and the Club will cover the cost.
Any interested parents or youth players who have an interest in acquiring a supervisory qualification for official registration as a small sided games facilitator please give either Shirl a call on 5482 6101; Anette on 5486 1136; or Sue on 5483 6569 to book a place and get further details.

Great Working Bee Turnout
It was great to see such a strong turnout by Diggers at last weekend's working bee down at the playing fields at One Mile. A top effort was put in by all those in attendance and we more than capably contributed to the overall success of the morning's activities. It was good to see our Club President Steve Manthey heading the vanguard in what was considered a remarkable response to the call for assistance. The day became quite hot by the finish of work, but as usual, the willing workers were well catered to by Football Gympie President Trevor Kirk who ensured a good supply of beverage to offset the humid conditions. With a good deal of the preparatory work complete there are still some small tasks to tend to over the coming weeks ahead of the commencement of play in the 2008 Season. We will keep you posted here for the opportunity to help out on one of the upcoming working bee days. Again, a great turnout by Diggers; keep up the top work, and thanks to all those who attended on the weekend. We hope to see you and perhaps a couple of new faces down on the fields for the next one.

Working Bee - Saturday 23rd February 0600
There's another pre-Season working Bee on this weekend. Please note, we have at least one keen member who'll be there - and he will have worked through the night before, and is still going to be down there helping out. So if you are reading this and think you might be able to drag yourself out of bed on this fine Saturday morn to lend a hand to the field preparation efforts, spare a thought for the other fellow who won't have had a wink of sleep since Friday morning, and who indeed has to go to work again after the working bee. Please help out if you can. Your efforts are appreciated.
